British Medical Acupuncture Society - Software Review by Dr. Colin Lewis

Since my earlier reviews of Zhangmen this software has now received a major update, giving it a very modern look and feel. (added by manufacturer: Zhangmen software works with Windows and Apple MacOS)

The main menu has all the necessary features displayed in an uncluttered fashion across the top. There is a mix of patient administration, clinical syndromes and point locations, all of which are accessed quickly and intuitively. New to this edition is the integration with Microsoft Office components such as Excel for making customised invoices, Outlook for appointments, and Word for practice information documents. One click connects to the web for more information (updates, veterinary acupuncture, point practice etc).

I am delighted that the WHO nomenclature is used for acupuncture points (other acupuncture companies please take note). Entering the point name eg st36 brings up a box with a graphic showing the location with a brief description. A separate menu item covers ear points. The graphics are adequate (..) but load very quickly. The points on the hand and foot are shown over 'real' hand/foot pictures. The zoom feature shows some underlying structures such as bone or muscle as appropriate.

The therapy section has been expanded and now includes further details about ear acupuncture, pictures and tables, herb and nutrition information. There are texts that describe treatment approaches to smoking, headache, pregnancy and needling techniques.

The Traditional approach is emphasised with sections for pulse and tongue patterns. In the previous edition of Zhangmen I took issue with the brevity of information and recommended more extensive text descriptions. In Zhangmen, I like the concise presentation of information, which helps as a memory jogger rather than a complete textbook.

The optional data module allows you to customise Zhangmen information by adding or changing data to your preference. Generally, the help facility is excellent, and patient information entered is always backed up to minimise loss of information.

This version is a significant improvement. The integration with Microsoft office components gives the program tremendous versatility for all the administrative and management tasks. I would like to see more information on Medical acupuncture, but otherwise this is an excellent example of well thought-out acupuncture software.

Zhangmen review from www.tcmstudent.com
A group from the Netherlands came out with this one and since it is version 10 (at this moment it is version 14) I would assume they have been through a few versions already. This is a reference guide which is in database form (which means it's changeable). It contains in depth info on all the points, microsystems and pulse and tongue diagnosis. (...) It seems like they just tried to jam in as much info on this one. The software also contains an interesting search function and data module that can be added (..). The site actually offers a free demo which is cool.
